Thinking about Thinking…

I’m in the process of reading Malcom Gladwell’s book “Blink“. The sub-title is “The Power of Thinking Without Thinking”. Anyone who knows me might claim that’s generally how I get by…(ha!) But in all seriousness, it’s an interesting read from the few chapters I’ve gotten through thus far.
I’m just getting into this book, and I’m planning on reading another one when I’m finished, called “The Wisdom of Crowds“. Both of these books deal with issues surrounding conscious and sub-conscious thought and how our experiences, knowledge and other factors influence the outcome of various decisions, assumptions and conclusions. I don’t know why, but the topic really interests me right now. I guess it’s been a long-time fascination of mine; the notion of “thought” and what makes our brains (most, anyhow!) capable of so much, yet so unable to decipher themselves. What are the factors that result in those oh-so-rare “aha!” moments when something becomes so clear? How do people make the conceptual leaps that lead to breakthroughs? What is “genius” really?
I don’t expect that I’ll get a whole lot further with any of those questions simply by reading these books. But, it’ll be interesting to see what other folks have to say on the topic. I’ll post more *thinking* about it as I go.
